Assignment 4: Everything is a Remix response

It was a very interesting video, it hold an opinion that everything in our world is a Remix, and there were 3 steps of remix: copy, transformation and combine. This rule can be applied to every aspect in our life not only about design. There are two examples in the video provide me further understanding about remix: the movie example and the computer example.

The author give example of 4 movies which all made by 1999. I have watched 2 of them: Dark City and the Matrix, and I have heard the 13th Floor. Dark City is one of my favorite sci-fi movies and I think I have watched it over 4 times, the most recent time was last year in MOMA’s sci-fi series. I think I have read an article which talked about how World on a Wire inspired the Matrix and the Thirteenth Floor. And World on a Wire adopted from a science fiction Simulacron-3. Literature, film, art, science…for me, they are no different from each other, they are just different ways to show/express how the author/artist see this world.

The author also used the computer example, I saw the switch example from different classes but this was the first time that I really started to have concept of it because no professor showed us picture or video, and I happen to be a vision person. And this also helped to understand why computer use binary calculation because it’s exactly the same as the switch: binary only has two numbers: 0 and 1.

“Barnard of Chartres used to say that we are dwarfs on the shoulders of giants” which is said by John of Salisbury. I want to add something to make the sentence to be “We are dwarfs on the shoulders of giants who made of millions of dwarfs.” I have been confused by a question for many years: what’s the purpose of my life? I’m just one tiny normal person, and I’m not as smart as real genius. There are only few people of this earth can make great creation which will change the whole world. Will I be able to achieve something? Will I be able to create something? Right now I think maybe everything I do is exploring the answer for this question, and I’m the only one who can provide the answer for myself. This video not only provide me the idea that everything is remix, and it also inspired me that with remix, I’m able to create something, it’s like reveal the mysterious veil from the creation nymph and makes it touchable.
